GIRLSET, the global girl group under JYPE and Republic Records, released their third single “Tweak” to instant fanfare. While initially debuting with a more K-Pop-adjacent sound, the girls’ recent rebrand has come with a new, more Western sound that suits them much better. Even fans who once doubted the change in style started to change their tune when their previous single, “Little Miss” was released, and “Tweak” proves that its success was not a fluke.

“Tweak” is an empowering, R&B-inspired track about being unwilling to put up with men who disrespect you. Paired with a melody that samples “Weak” by the 90s R&B girl group, SVW, the song’s lyrics give its retro beat a modern edge:

“You play a game that’s very dangerous
You must be out of your mind
So this time, I’m taking back the reins
Won’t ‘pologize”

Following the lead of the group’s first two singles, “Tweak” continues the trend of having the girls cycle through the chorus, with each member having their own opportunity to showcase their unique vocal color. It’s a unique feature of GIRLSET’s songs that helps them stand out amongst other girl groups.

The song’s music video depicts the members of GIRLSET saving SAVANNA from a bad date and taking her out for a good time instead. The message of the video is clear: you can always leave a situation that makes you uncomfortable whenever you want, with no explanation, and your friends will always be there to cheer you up afterwards. Undoubtedly, fans watching it will see the kind of friend group they want to be part of, with the members being shown buying snacks and getting makeovers together.

Aside from the music video, the group also released a performance video where fans can see the full choreography in all its glory. The group constantly utilizes their four-member lineup to its fullest potential, giving each member a chance to shine while also showcasing their chemistry as a group. The visuals of the performance video also give a small nod to JYP’s first girl group, the Wonder Girls, having a strikingly similar vibe to their music video for “Why So Lonely”, with KENDALL having the same pink hair that Yeeun (HA:TFELT) had in that era.

While this release was just a single, the group did release a Spanish version of “Tweak” along with some other remixes. CAMILA and SAVANNA, the two Latina members, both contributed to the lyrics of this version of the song, which closely mirror the original lyrics while making small changes to better suit the rhyme scheme. The members have previously stated that they wish to incorporate their respective cultures into their music, and this shows that they have the full support of their label.

In an era where fans often feel like groups are throwing ideas at a wall and hoping something sticks, “Tweak” reassures them that GIRLSET is a group with a strong creative vision behind them that gets clearer with each release. As frustrating as it can be for fans to wait for a full album, releasing singles one at a time is a winning strategy, with each one leaving them begging for more.
